Which High Fiber Foods Are Best When Dieting?
The biggest challenges dieters face is trying to find foods that are tasty, filling, and healthy. High fiber foods offer all of the above and so much more. They also help to reduce cholesterol, lower your chances of colon cancer, and help to control blood sugar levels. Best of all, adding these super foods to your daily diet doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult.
High Fiber Foods
Check out the following list of high fiber foods that will help you lose weight, control hunger, curb cravings, and – most importantly – protect your overall health.
1. Apples (3 – 5 grams per apple)
An apple a day might not actually keep the doctor away. But, one thing is for sure, this delicious fruit packs a powerful fiber punch. One medium apple contains 4 grams of fiber. A large apple contains 5 grams. So, before heading out the door, stash an apple or two in your bag as a snack between meals.
2. Artichoke Hearts (14 grams per cup)
Rich in both antioxidants and fiber, artichoke hearts make a perfect addition to any pizza, pasta, or salad. A cup of artichoke hearts contain only 90 calories, but has a whopping 14 grams of fiber. If you don’t want to take the time to prepare them fresh, try going for the canned or jarred artichokes.
3. Flaxseeds (approx. 3 grams per tablespoon)
Simply sprinkling these seeds on your salad, yogurt ,or smoothie can add almost 3 grams of fiber to your meal, leaving you feeling satiated for longer. Flaxseeds are also an excellent source of omega-3 fats, a nutrient known for reducing inflammation, stabilizing mood, and even preventing heart disease and diabetes.
4. Almonds (3.5 grams per ounce)
If you want to get rid of hunger and squash your cravings, consider adding a healthy amount of almonds to your diet. This type of nut delivers a ton of fiber in a little package. Keep some in your bag or at your desk so you can dig in whenever those nasty cravings sneak up on you.
5. Avocado (approx. 10 grams per cup)
No list of high fiber foods would be complete without the amazing avocado. Not only does this fruit offer nearly 10 grams of fiber per cup, it also contains healthy fats, potassium, and vitamin K. Not to mention, avocados are absolutely delicious. Cut it into slices then add it to your favorite sandwich or salad to keep you filling full until your next meal.
